What a KakoBuy order really costs: the no-handling-fee promise, every add-on price, domestic freight and a three-item total

Checked and updated .

Short answer: KakoBuy says it charges no handling fees: your total is the item price, domestic freight to its warehouse, international shipping and a customs declaration cost that is generally ¥8 per parcel. Optional services run from ¥2 per extra photo to ¥20 for vacuum packing. A hypothetical three-item order of ¥470 came to about $113 delivered to the US on a 1 kg tax-free line.

The formula behind every KakoBuy total

KakoBuy's help article 63 sets the formula plainly. It promises a free shopping agent service and lists no handling fee beyond the item cost and the shipping fee. Everything that makes a real total higher than the price on a spreadsheet row falls into four buckets.

Payment charges and border duties or VAT can arrive outside the formula. KakoBuy's €3 per parcel EU duty charge, added to shipping at checkout under its 23 June 2026 notice, is the best known; our page on duty-free lines covers the lines. The price on a row of the KakoBuy spreadsheet is only the first bucket.

No handling fee, but four buckets of cost, and the item price is only one of them.

Domestic freight: the cost people miss

Domestic freight is what the seller charges to carry your item inside China to KakoBuy's warehouse in Xiamen. KakoBuy folds it into "item cost", so you pay it at checkout, with the product price, before the item has shipped anywhere near you.

KakoBuy's article 75 gives one rule worth planning around: if you buy several products from the same seller, submit them and pay in a single purchase order, it charges the domestic delivery fee once. If the products add up to an overweight parcel, customer service will tell you and you owe the shortfall. So group items by shop and pay each shop's items together. The time those domestic legs take is on the warehouse location page.

Group items by shop in one order so the domestic freight is paid once.

Value-added service prices

All of these are optional, and all prices below are KakoBuy's own, in yuan, as read on 12 October 2026.

Worked example: a three-item order

Take three hypothetical items from three shops (example prices, not real listings): ¥120, ¥260 and ¥90. The shops charge domestic freight of ¥8, ¥10 and ¥6. You buy four extra photos (¥2 each) and pre-packing (¥18), and the parcel carries the usual ¥8 declaration. For shipping, use KakoBuy's estimator quote for a 1 kg US parcel on the USPS Tax-Free Line, $39.28 on 12 October 2026 with no dimensions entered. Sums ran in Python at ¥1 ≈ $0.14.

Items: ¥120 + ¥260 + ¥90 = ¥470 = $65.80

Domestic freight: ¥8 + ¥10 + ¥6 = ¥24 = $3.36

Extras: 4 × ¥2 + ¥18 = ¥26 = $3.64

Declaration: ¥8 = $1.12

International shipping: $39.28

Total before payment charges: $65.80 + $3.36 + $3.64 + $1.12 + $39.28 = $113.20

Shipping is 34.7% of that total, and everything that is not the item price, shipping included, is about 42%. A PayPal charge comes on top. Paid as two payments of $73.92 (items, freight, extras and declaration) and $39.28 (shipping), the 3.5% plus $0.30 version costs $4.56 and the 2.9% plus $0.30 version $3.88, making the total $117.76 or $117.08. The flat $0.30 repeats on each payment, which is another reason to group orders. Compare your own parcel with the shipping calculator.

Here a $65.80 haul landed at $113.20 before payment charges, so budget for roughly 1.7 times the item price.

Payment charges and the currency question

KakoBuy prices in Chinese yuan. Item pages show a converted estimate: the example we read showed CNY ¥488 ≈ $79.01. That implies about $0.162 per yuan, noticeably more than the $0.14 we use for quick sums. At the displayed rate the ¥528 of non-shipping costs in the example above would be about $85.49 and the total $124.77, not $113.20. Its stated method: PayPal converts to dollars and the rate follows Bank of China's latest published figure.

On handling charges, KakoBuy's pages contradict each other: article 64 gives PayPal as 3.5% plus US$0.30 and article 65 as 2.9% plus US$0.30. We could not confirm which applies today. Alipay and WeChat Pay are listed with no handling charge. A PayPal payment's shipping address must match your KakoBuy recipient address. The payment methods page compares them. KakoBuy's pages mention an account balance, yet our advice is to pay per order and per parcel.

Expect a dollar total above our $0.14 sums, and check the PayPal rate at checkout.

Return and exchange fees

Ask for a return or exchange inside 5 days (120 hours) of stock-in; the seller must accept returns and the item must be resalable. For non-Prime users, the opening return and exchange of each calendar month carry no service fee, then the tiers apply, in addition to shipping to and from the seller.

Request number in a monthReturnExchange

6th to 9th¥10¥20

Seller errors, quality problems and damage in domestic transit are not charged to you. Details sit on the refunds and returns page. To sanity-check an order before paying, use the QR code on our contact page.

The first return and exchange each month is free; after that the fee climbs by tier.

Questions buyers ask

Does KakoBuy charge a service fee?

Not for the agent service itself. KakoBuy's help article 63 lists no handling fee beyond item cost and shipping, and calls its value-added services optional. The costs that remain are the declaration charge, generally ¥8 per parcel, payment-method charges such as PayPal's, and any duty or VAT. Always check the checkout screen before paying.

What is domestic freight on KakoBuy?

It is the seller's charge for delivering your item inside China to KakoBuy's warehouse, and it is added to the item cost. Each shop sets its own amount. If you buy several products from the same seller and pay in one purchase order, KakoBuy says it charges the domestic delivery fee once. An overweight order can bring a shortfall request.

What is the ¥8 declaration fee on KakoBuy?

It is the customs declaration cost for a parcel, which KakoBuy's help article 63 says is generally RMB 8, depending on the shipping method. At ¥1 ≈ $0.14 that is about $1.12. It is charged per parcel, not per item, so putting more items into one parcel spreads it. EU parcels also carry the separate €3 duty charge KakoBuy adds at checkout.

Which currency does KakoBuy use, and what exchange rate?

Prices are shown in Chinese yuan with a converted estimate, for example an item page showing CNY ¥488 ≈ $79.01. PayPal converts everything to US dollars, and KakoBuy says it adjusts its exchange rate to the latest Bank of China rate. That display implies about $0.162 per yuan, above the $0.14 we use, so expect your dollar bill to be higher.

Is KakoBuy's PayPal fee 3.5% or 2.9%?

KakoBuy's own pages disagree. Help article 64 states PayPal handling at 3.5% plus US$0.30, article 65 says 2.9% plus US$0.30. On a $113.20 order the gap is about $0.68. We could not confirm which is live, so check what your checkout shows. Alipay and WeChat Pay list no handling fee, and the PayPal address must match your recipient address.

Are returns and exchanges free on KakoBuy?

Only the first of each kind per calendar month, for non-Prime users. A return then costs ¥5, ¥10 or ¥20 depending on how many you have made that month, and an exchange ¥10, ¥20 or ¥40. Shipping to and from the seller also applies, except for seller errors and quality problems. The request must come within 5 days of stock-in.
