Why decor is awkward freight
A KakoBuy spreadsheet's room-decor section tends to list low prices and easy-to-like photos: soft rugs, ceramic vases, glass candle holders, mushroom lamps, wall hangings and LED strings. The trouble starts after you pay. Decor is bulky for its weight, breakable, or electrical, and each of those problems adds a cost that the item price hides.
Three questions decide whether a row is worth it. How big is it when packed, not when displayed? Can it break, and if so, who pays? And does it need a plug or a battery that the shipping line may refuse or your country may not support? This page works through each, using KakoBuy's help-centre rules and its estimator quotes of 12 October 2026. For the general quoting method, our KakoBuy shipping guide lists every line.
| Type | Main risk | KakoBuy service that helps | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rugs and mats | Weight and rolled length | Pre-packing to learn the parcel weight | ¥18 per time |
| Lamps (mains) | Plug type and voltage | None; check the listing | - |
| Lamps (battery or USB) | Battery-restricted lines | Choose a line labelled battery accepted | Line price |
| Ceramics and glass | Breakage; no compensation | Fragile reinforcement (air-column bags) | ¥10 per item |
| Fabric hangings, posters | Few; light and flat | Vacuum packaging if bulky | ¥20 per parcel |
Sort decor rows by the shipping issue, because it matters more than the item price.
Rugs: weight and rolled volume
A rug's weight depends on pile and backing. A thin flatweave is light, while a plush pile can reach well over a kilogram per square metre. KakoBuy publishes no per-product weights, so the table uses two assumed densities, 600 g/m² for a thin rug and 1,500 g/m² for a plush one. These are our planning assumptions, not measurements, and a seller's listed weight should replace them.
| Size (cm) | Area (m²) | Thin rug | Plush rug |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 × 90 | 0.54 | 324 g | 810 g |
| 80 × 120 | 0.96 | 576 g | 1,440 g |
| 120 × 160 | 1.92 | 1,152 g | 2,880 g |
| 160 × 230 | 3.68 | 2,208 g | 5,520 g |
The rolled shape adds to the cost. Carriers measure a parcel's outer dimensions, so a rug rolled to a 20 cm diameter and 100 cm long counts as 100 × 20 × 20 cm, or 40,000 cm³. Divided by 5000 that is 8.0 kg; by 6000, 6.67 kg; by 8000, 5.0 kg. A 3 kg rug is therefore billed as 5 to 8 kg on a volumetric line. KakoBuy's estimator page lists quotes by weight only up to the 2,000 g figures we read, so we cannot price a large rug from the quotes here: enter your rolled dimensions in the official estimator and compare lines. The cheaper options for a big rug are often the lines whose notes state a larger divisor.
A large rug is a volumetric parcel; get the rolled dimensions before you decide it is a bargain.
Lamps: plugs, voltage and battery lines
A lamp row raises an electrical question before a shipping one. Mains lamps made for the Chinese market may come with a plug that does not match your socket, and some are rated for a narrower voltage range than your country's supply. The US and Canada use about 120 V; the UK, Germany and Spain use about 230 V, with different plug shapes for the UK and for continental Europe. A listing that says "100–240 V" is a good sign, but the plug may still need an adapter. A USB-powered or battery-powered lamp avoids the question.
Batteries narrow the shipping choices. KakoBuy's estimator names lines by what they accept: USPS Tax-Free Line (Battery Accepted) to the US, Cosmetics Air Express (Battery, Liquid), and lines marked "electrified" such as the Canada HD Line-electrified. Lines labelled EUB (Batteries and Perfume Not Allowed) refuse them. KakoBuy's help pages also tell users that electrical products may be restricted by customs policy and that it takes no responsibility for clearance in those cases. Its QC looks at accessories and visible damage on electronics, with no function test, so switch the lamp on the day it arrives. See the electronics page for the battery line list.
Lamps are also awkward in shape. A shade or glass globe is light but takes room, and a ceramic base is heavy and breakable at once. Treat a lamp with a ceramic or glass part as a fragile item in the next section.
Choose USB or battery lamps, or confirm voltage and plug type, before the row goes into your parcel.
Ceramics and glass: fragile packing at ¥10
This is the most important rule on the page. KakoBuy's help centre says that for glass, ceramics and similar goods it can only guarantee their integrity before shipment. If the logistics provider classes the goods as fragile and they are damaged during delivery, the losses are borne by the user. Its terms say the same for ceramics and glass products and irregular items. In plain terms: if a vase breaks in transit, expect no compensation from KakoBuy.
The ¥10 fragile reinforcement service is the available protection. KakoBuy describes it as air-column bags that fully cover the item with buffer protection and strong shock resistance, intended mainly for ceramics and glass. Key conditions from the help article:
- It is charged per item: three glasses in one order means buying the service three times.
- You can purchase it when the item status is "Warehousing" or "Can submit parcel".
- Write the OG order number in the remarks box.
- Processing takes up to 24 hours, with a photo of the packed item sent as a message, and the item weight is updated afterwards.
The service reduces risk; it does not remove the no-compensation rule, and nothing in our notes confirms whether Kako Insurance would pay for breakage, so read the insurance page before assuming it does. Mugs and glasses from the home items on the women's page follow the same rules. Cheap, low-stakes pieces are fine; one-off pieces you could not replace are not.
Buy ceramics and glass only if you accept losing them, and pay the ¥10 per item for the best odds.
Which lines bill by volume
Not every KakoBuy line uses volumetric weight, and the rule for those that do is not the same everywhere. In KakoBuy's wording, a parcel's length, width and height in cm are multiplied and divided by a divisor of 5000, 6000, 7000 or 8000 chosen by the logistics provider; the bigger of that number and scale weight becomes the chargeable weight. It adds that not every parcel on such lines is billed by volume. The estimator pages show "parcel length, width, and height information is needed" beside the quotes, and in some line notes they state a divisor. The ones we found on 12 October 2026:
| Destination | Line | Divisor stated | Rolled rug 100 × 20 × 20 cm |
|---|---|---|---|
| US, Canada | Cosmetics Air Express (Battery, Liquid) | 6000 | 6.67 kg |
| UK | UK Air Freight Direct Line (Economy) | 8000 | 5.00 kg |
| UK | Cosmetics Air Express (Battery, Liquid) | 8000 | 5.00 kg |
| Canada | Canada HG Line-H, HG Line-S, HD Line-electrified | 8000 | 5.00 kg |
| Any | Lines named "Actual Weight" | No volume formula in the name | Actual weight |
Many other lines, such as the USPS Tax-Free Line, show no divisor in the text we captured. We do not infer one. Enter your parcel's dimensions in the estimator and see which quote changes. The shipping calculator guide walks through it.
Where a line states a bigger divisor, bulky decor costs less; where it states none, test with dimensions.
Worked example: one lamp and two vases to the UK and Canada
Here is a hypothetical parcel: a small USB desk lamp at ¥90 (800 g, boxed 20 × 20 × 15 cm) and two ceramic vases at ¥70 each, with ¥10 fragile reinforcement on each vase. Packed together with air-column bags the parcel is 30 × 25 × 20 cm and weighs 2,000 g. Goods total ¥230, or $32.20 at ¥1 ≈ $0.14. The sums:
Lamp alone: 20 × 20 × 15 = 6,000 cm³ → 6,000 ÷ 5000 = 1.20 kg; ÷ 6000 = 1.00 kg; ÷ 8000 = 0.75 kg (actual 0.80 kg)
Parcel: 30 × 25 × 20 = 15,000 cm³ → ÷ 5000 = 3.00 kg; ÷ 6000 = 2.50 kg; ÷ 8000 = 1.875 kg (actual 2.00 kg)
On an 8000 line: billed = max(2.00, 1.875) = 2.00 kg → the 2,000 g quote
Extras: fragile ¥20 ($2.80) + declaration ¥8 ($1.12) = $3.92
UK Air Freight Direct Line (Economy), 2,000 g: $32.20 + $3.92 + $29.33 = $65.45
Canada HG Line-H, 2,000 g: $32.20 + $3.92 + $42.13 = $78.25
Both quotes are from KakoBuy's estimator on 12 October 2026 for 2,000 g with no dimensions. On a 6000 line the same parcel would be billed 2.50 kg, which is beyond the weights we have quotes for, so it could not be priced here. Shipping is 45% of the UK total and 54% of the Canadian one, which shows why light, unbreakable decor ships better. Sellers dispatch in 3 to 7 days and the Xiamen warehouse receives goods in 1 to 7 working days, so allow time. See the UK page for VAT, and the Canada page for the CAD 20 rule.
Settle each order at checkout and each parcel at submission. If you want to ask about a specific row first, the WhatsApp QR is on our contact page. The KakoBuy spreadsheet homepage lists current finds.
Price the packed parcel, not the item, and keep fragile pieces to ones you can afford to lose.
Questions buyers ask
Does KakoBuy pay if a vase breaks in transit?
No, not for fragile goods. KakoBuy's help centre says it can only guarantee the integrity of glass, ceramics and similar items before shipment, and if the carrier classes them as fragile and they break, the user bears the loss. The ¥10 per item air-column reinforcement lowers the risk but does not change that rule. Price each ceramic row on the basis that it may not arrive.
How much does fragile reinforcement cost?
KakoBuy charges ¥10 per item, about $1.40, for air-column bag packing aimed at ceramics and glass. It is charged by quantity, so three glasses means three services, and you buy it once the item is in the warehouse. The weight is updated after packing, so the bags can add grams or volume to your parcel. Photos of the packed item come back within 24 hours.
Can I ship a lamp with a battery or a plug?
Yes on the right lines. KakoBuy's estimator labels lines such as USPS Tax-Free Line (Battery Accepted) or Cosmetics Air Express (Battery, Liquid), while EUB lines say batteries are not allowed. Mains lamps also need your country's plug and voltage, which the seller may not supply. Read the listing for 100–240 V and plug type, or choose a USB or battery model.
Why is a rolled rug billed as heavier than it weighs?
On volumetric lines the carrier multiplies the three dimensions in cm, divides by its own divisor, and bills whichever is greater, that figure or the scale weight. A rug rolled to 100 × 20 × 20 cm is 40,000 cm³, or 8 kg at 5000 even if it weighs 3 kg. Check the line's divisor before paying.
Which KakoBuy lines bill by volume?
Only some say so. KakoBuy's estimator text states a divisor of 6000 for Cosmetics Air Express to the US and Canada, 8000 for UK Air Freight Direct Line (Economy), and 8000 for Canada HG Line-H and HG Line-S. Many other lines show no divisor in the text we read on 12 October 2026, so enter dimensions in the estimator and compare.
Is room decor worth importing at all?
Sometimes. Decor that is flat, light and unbreakable, such as posters, fabric hangings and small LED strings, ships well. Bulky or breakable pieces often cost more to move than to buy. Our example of one lamp and two vases spends $29.33 on UK shipping against $32.20 of goods, so shipping is nearly half the bill. Compare with local prices first.
