A business marketplace, and what that changes
Alibaba.com serves companies buying from manufacturers and trading suppliers. Listings show price tiers by quantity, a minimum order, and often a "contact supplier" button instead of a cart. Alibaba Group also owns Taobao, Tmall, 1688 and AliExpress, which is why people mix them up, but each serves a different buyer.
KakoBuy's job is to buy retail items from domestic Chinese sites and ship them abroad. Its help centre lists Taobao, Tmall, 1688 and JD.com as well supported. Alibaba.com is not on that list, and we found no KakoBuy page about it. Treat any Alibaba.com row on the KakoBuy spreadsheet as outside the tested route.
Alibaba.com is for supplier deals; KakoBuy is for retail rows.
Columns an Alibaba supplier sheet needs
Because the unit of work is a conversation with a supplier, the sheet records replies, not just links.
| Column | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier and listing link | Company name, product page | Names change; links vanish |
| Minimum order quantity | Units, per variant | Decides if the row is usable |
| Price tiers | Unit price per quantity band | Headline price needs a high quantity |
| Sample price and shipping | Quoted, in writing | Samples are priced apart |
| Lead time | Days to dispatch | Compare suppliers fairly |
| Quote date and status | Date, replied or not | Quotes expire |
Record what the supplier said and when; links alone prove nothing.
Samples before quantity
If you do consider a supplier, a sample is the usual first step: one or a few pieces to check material, sizing and finish. Sample terms vary by supplier, and we could not verify any specifics, so confirm price, delivery cost and lead time in writing. Do not pay a larger order until you have handled the sample.
Keep in mind that a business purchase can fall under different customs treatment than personal parcels. KakoBuy says parcels over 10 kg are more likely to be treated as commercial. Check your destination's official customs page for how commercial imports are declared; our duty-free lines page covers only KakoBuy's personal-parcel routes.
Handle a sample first; scale up only after the supplier proves itself.
The route inside KakoBuy that is closest: 1688
If the goal is wholesale-like pricing through an agent, 1688 is the platform KakoBuy actually supports. It has the same minimum-quantity logic: KakoBuy says an order below the seller's minimum is invalid, and that it counts boxes, not the pieces in them. Our 1688 guide works through tiers and a landed-cost example.
For a single retail item, skip both and use an ordinary row: see how Weidian rows behave, or the direct-export option on the AliExpress page.
Closest KakoBuy equivalent to Alibaba.com is 1688, with the same minimum-order rule.
A quick cost check for a small personal order
Say a supplier quotes ¥30 per piece at a minimum of 2, as a hypothetical. That is ¥60, about $8.40 at ¥1 = $0.14, before shipping. If the piece weighs 500 g and KakoBuy's estimator quote for a 500 g UK parcel of $9.84 (12 October 2026) applied, the shipping alone exceeds the goods. The point is not the number, it is the ratio: small orders are dominated by shipping, whichever platform sold the goods. If you want help judging a row, scan the QR on the contact page and pay per order.
Check the shipping share before you chase a lower unit price.
Questions buyers ask
Is Alibaba.com the same as 1688?
No, though both belong to Alibaba Group. Alibaba.com is the English-language B2B marketplace aimed at overseas business buyers, while 1688 is the domestic Chinese wholesale platform. KakoBuy supports 1688 and has help pages for it. It does not list Alibaba.com among its supported platforms, so an Alibaba.com quote cannot be assumed to work in KakoBuy.
Can I buy one piece on Alibaba.com?
Sometimes, but the listing decides. Suppliers set minimum order quantities, and many are above one piece. Where a seller allows a smaller order, the unit price is usually higher than the quoted tier. Read the minimum on the listing and ask the supplier before paying, and expect samples to be priced separately.
What is a sample order and why does it cost more?
A sample is a small trial order, usually priced above the bulk unit price, sometimes with shipping charged separately. Suppliers use it to cover handling for a single piece. We did not verify any Alibaba.com sample terms. Ask for the sample price, delivery cost and lead time in writing before agreeing.
Is an Alibaba spreadsheet a list of things to buy?
Usually it is a supplier list, not a shopping list: company name, product, minimum quantity, price tiers, sample cost, lead time and contact status. Some people use the term for product finds, but the useful versions record what each supplier quoted and when, so replies from several suppliers can be compared.
Does KakoBuy ship Alibaba.com orders?
KakoBuy says it ships parcels bought through its own purchasing service or forwarded to its warehouse. We have not tested Alibaba.com orders and found nothing in its help centre that covers them. Large quantities and parcels over 10 kg are also more likely to be treated as commercial, which changes customs handling.
When does a retail row beat an Alibaba.com quote?
When you need one to a handful of pieces. A KakoBuy row has no handling fee, a declaration cost of generally ¥8, 100 days of free storage and a 5-day return window if the seller allows it. An Alibaba.com supplier is built for repeat orders at a quantity you may not want.
